Customising Talks

By pressing the Talks key followed by the menu key Talks settings screen will load;

Assuming that you only have Talks installed and not the Accessibility Suite and that you are not running in demonstration mode, if you are running in demo mode or the full Nuance Accessibility Suite version then please press the right arrow key and follow from below:

Note that there are normally several screens within the settings of Talks, these are accessed by moving left to right with the arrow keys or joystick. Not all screens are accessible or present depending on your version of Talks purchased. TalkNav is able to sell new and upgraded licences to any client anywhere in the World, no matter whether you bought initially from us or not.

You are presented firstly with the basic Talks settings, initially which synthesiser is to be used. NOTE if you change this to `off` then Talks will not speak and sighted assistance may be required to change this setting back to a functional one. If you have installed more than one synthesiser then they will appear in this list and you can choose between them. Please note that Talks maybe locked depending on your licence style to a specific synthesiser. If you wish to change to a different one which you are not licence to use please contact us. We will be able to upgrade your licence to one that works with either a different synthesiser or more than one.

Volume - this setting changes the volume that Talks outputs at, remember that you can also use `Talks` key followed by either number 4 or number 5 to raise or lower the volume respectively.

Speed - This setting changes how fast Talks reads at, remember `Talks` key followed by number 7 or number 8 will speed up or slow down Talks respectively.

Spelling Speed - This setting changes the speed that Talks reads at when you ask it to spell a word that it is on. Useful to check the spelling carefully of given words or names etc.

Pitch - This changes the pitch that certain synthesiser operate at, note that not all synthesisers are able to make pitch adjustments although the setting is there anyhow.

Key Echo - This setting changes what Talks reads whilst you are entering numbers or words into anything from the phone book to text messages etc. It can be set to `letters`, `words` or `both`. Letters means that as you type each character Talks announces that character, like wise words means that as you type Talks will read the complete word only when you press the space (0), it will not read each character as you type. The both option enables Talks to read character by character and when you press the space button (0) it will also say the word.

Speak Upper Case - This makes Talks emphasise upper case letters.

Use Spelling Alphabet - This means that Talks rather than saying letters as for example A, it will say Alpha. In other words it will use the phonetic alphabet.

Speak Punctuation - This changes the level of punctuation announced to the user, it can be set to all, some etc.

Read Numbers - This changes Talks from reading numbers as individual figures or as a complete number. i.e. rather than 120 Talks could say 1 2 0. Useful if somebody sends you a phone number etc.

Advanced Settings:

Read Function Keys - This option changes whether or not Talks reads the function of soft key one and two always, or on request. It should be left to always for the first month or so of use until you are familiar with the use of your handset, after which you might find it more easier to switch it to on request. If the setting is on by request, press `Talks` key followed by soft key one to hear what soft keys one and two do at any given screen.

Read List Index - This feature announces details of the index of the menu that you are in, i.e. how many items are within the menu and if there is a number of tabs, i.e. you can press left / right arrows to move through different menus.

Verbose Descriptions - This changes the level of description heard, most users should leave this on yes.

Mute On Key Lock - This should b set to `yes` that way when your phone is in your pocket etc on key lock, Talks will not speak when your phones buttons are accidentally pressed.

Cursor Mode - There are three modes, `normal`, `character` and `words`, this changes the way that Talks behaves when reading text messages and e-mails. rather than left and right keys moving between messages in `normal` mode, character or words enables the left and right arrows to scroll through the message itself.

T9 Key Echo - Should be left to yes / on.

Echo Passwords - Should be set to no, unless you wish to hear your passwords and PIN numbers as you type them in, when Talks is set to `no` for this setting as you type any password or PIN in Talks will say `star` for each character entered. Essential for when you are in public and entering PIN numbers etc.

Talks Key Timeout - When you are pressing the Talks key followed by any other button to initiate a Talks related function, the default setting is that Talks will wait an indefinite time for you to press the next key. But if you set this to a time limit then Talks will time out the feature after that time. We recommend that you set this to no more than 3 seconds, but you'll find your own personal preference with use.

Talks Mode Timeout - Leave this on the default setting which is single commands.

Full List Items - Leave on the default setting.

Automation:

Caller ID - enables Talks to announce the callers phone number or name when your phone is ringing automatically rather than when you press soft key two.

Repeat Caller ID - Makes Talks repeat the callers ID after a specific time interval.

New Messages - This as with the caller ID feature enables new SMS text messages to be automatically read out when they arrive, this can be useful if for example when you are on a bus or train etc. and your phone is not easy to get to, or when walking around and you have a stick in your hand.

User Dictionary:

This feature enables users to enter in specific phrases or words that they wish Talks to read differently, useful if your name etc is pronounced incorrectly etc. The user has the ability to decide if they want to make the entry a global one i.e. Talks uses the change in every screen on the phone, or just the specific screen that the entry is found in.
