Goodbye Torsten, and thank you so much for the precious gift of accessibility you've left us. I'll miss your genius, your dedication and our conversations. You live on in the voices of many thousands of talking mobile phones and in the hearts of appreciative users like me.

James Scholes United Kingdom
From the first time I held a Nokia 6600 in my hand and heard TALKS speak, I have felt that TALKS as always been ahead of the competition. Torsten, as product manager, always worked as hard as he could to ensure that blind individuals all over the world had access to their mobile device, no matter what language they spoke, or what phone they decided was right for them. I can't sum up in words how much his efforts have mattered to me and hundreds of thousands of others, and I, for one, will miss him, his emails to the TALKS mailing lists, showing how committed he always was to the project. I'll miss the fact that he was always level-headed, and took everyone's ideas on-board, even if others were in disagreement, he would look at their idea from a clear, balanced standpoint. I thank him for everything. Not just for developing TALKS, but for being one of the few people who aren't afraid to experiment if they feel something good will come out of said experimenting.

VisionCue United States
We, at VisionCue, are deeply saddened by Torsten's passing and would like to express our sincere condolences to you and the Brand family. Warmest regards, Virginia, Kem, Roberto, Lori and Larry

Michael May United States
I first got to know Torsten in the mid 90s when I worked at Arkenstone and we would meet at international conferences. Once Talks was out, Sendero became one of the first dealers in the US and we went through many growing pains together. Torsten was always supportive of our passion, GPS for the blind. We would have dinner or a drink at conferences in the US, UK and Germany. The most amazing thing is that Torsten would always answer emails and deal with product support 7 days a week. It is this passion and dedication along with his incredible knowledge about everything to do with phones that is irreplaceable. I saw him at ATIA and CSUN this year and can't believe he won't be at the next conference or on the other end of a desperate email request for help. I will picture his voice every time I hit the "Talks" key. My heart goes out to his family, about whom I heard, but never met. Mike May

Ed Harper Ireland
Its a special loss to the family of a person who dies, particularly when that person doesn't seem to have had a good length of life, but with this death so much potential for good for a much wider community goes too. It isn't just the vision impaired but potentially the whole of the print disabled who will regret his passing. Every death is like a stone thrown into a pool, there are always ripples which spread out from it, but this one is more of a loss to more people than most.I hope these messages can bring you some comfort.

Shirley Ireland
RIP You'll be sadly missed thank you for all you did for blind people

I shall never forget the day I ran around London trying to find a compatible Talks phone. I ended up with a Nokia 6670 and I took it home. After having installed Talks, which even today is still such a novelty, I just sat and played with the phone for what must have been many hours. Talks has progressed in so many ways, and if it wasn't for Torsten, wouldn't have even gotten started. He shall be most definitely missed, but may his legacy live on for many a year yet. It is in the interests of a great many people to keep this product running for as long as we possibly can.

Ibrahim Gucukoglu United Kingdom

I wish to express my deepest and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and those who knew and loved him for the man that he was, those who respected him for the things he achieved and the things he had yet to achieve and finally, to express my sincerest thanks to those who would commemorate his passing by offering what support I'm able toward the fund.

It was thanks to Talks that I was able to enter the mobile phone revolution which has been life changing to put it mildly. I would not be where I am in my career if I did not have full access to a mobile phone. My most recent memory of Torsten will be of him demonstrating Talks v5 on a touch screen phone! I had liked the implementatio and I appreciate his no nonsense style of discussion.

Rest in peace, torsten, and my sincere Condolence to Corinna and her children and the rest of the family. You did so much for blind community of the world.

Valiant8086 United States

I thank Torsten and deeply mourn his loss and express my gratitude and condolences to his family without whose support I am sure this effort would not have been so successful. Torsten! Ich jedenfalls werde Dir stets danken, wenn ich mein Handy benutze, um all das zu tun, was auch sehende Menschen mit ihren Handys tun!

Thank you, Talks has become an invaluable tool in my life.

Paolo Graziani Italy

Code Factory Spain
We would like to address our deepest sympathy to Torsten’s family and friends. There are no words to express our sadness. We have been competing with Talks for more than seven years, both of us aiming to create life-changing solutions, therefore this competition means something very special to us. Torsten Brand was indirectly a driving force for our company as well as a source of inspiration. It has been a great honor to compete with this pioneer of accessibility during all those years. As software developers we know too well the immense loss that it represents for the whole industry. Developing screen readers applications is a very difficult task that Torsten Brand was doing brilliantly. We thank Torsten for being one of the most important pioneers in accessible mobile technology, and for bringing a good product like Talks to the market. This competition has been very healthy, and in our case we can honestly say that it made us better, forcing us to be more creative and innovative in order to compete. We met with Torsten in ATIA and CSUN this year and were discussing together the future of mobile phones and accessibility. Our vision of the future has changed too suddenly with this very sad news. We will all miss him a lot and hope that his legacy will be honored and that Talks will keep being a great product. Again all our thoughts are with Torsten’s family and friends. It is with great respect and immense sadness that we say goodbye to the man who first made a mobile phone accessible to the blind and visually impaired.

Massimo Rainato Italy
Thanks for all.

Sabato de Rosa Italy
Condolence to Torsten's family.

To those who were lucky enough to know Torsten and to call him a friend, I can’t begin to imagine the devastation you all must feel. Losing a friend is always a shattering blow, but when one so young and in the prime of his life passes so unexpectedly, words are never good enough to express inner thoughts and true feelings. If you can, take heart in the fact that you had the honour and privilege of knowing Torsten on a personal level. You are blessed. He has touched so many with his innovation and drive; he has changed lives! For ever he will be remembered as the driving force behind accessible mobile technology. Most of us never really ‘knew’ him, but we know his name and what he has done. Every day I benefit from his vision and innovation. Torsten has given Visually Impaired and Blind people the ability to communicate and this is, and always will be, an invaluable legacy. Thank you Torsten for enabling us, the memory will always remain.

If U ever had a question on Talks you would answer me in a tick! You were always so helpful and your work on Talks is truly astounding. From all of us here at Sight & Sound, Rest In Peace

Paul Mahoney Ireland
I recieved one of the first Phones with speech and has made a huge difference in my life.

Elliott Barnes United Kingdom
Ever since I received my first Talks compatable device (the Nokia N73), mobile technology has enhanced my life to such a big extent, all thanks to Torsten's hard work. I sometimes wonder if it hadn't been for Torsten, us as the blind community would still be using inaccessible mobile devices; the thought of it is horrible. I'd therefore like to say a huge, huge thanks to Torsten's family for what they have given us, and I'm so sorry at your lost. Every time I hear Talks speak, I'll always be reminded of the hard work that Torsten put into Talks. To your family, I'm sorry about your loss. Torsten, rest in peace, you'll be dearly missed.

Ednun Pourtahmasbi United Kingdom
This is indeed a very sad time for all blind people. As a great admirer and user of the Talks system, it seems so unjust to me that someone so good could have his life taken so soon. i have used a talking mobile phone since 2002 and my life would have been far less rich and engaging without it. My prayers are with you and your family.

Herzlichen Dank, Herr Brand, and may you rest in peace.

Ruhe in Frieden... Torsten... Und danke.......!!!!!!!!!!!

I never thought I would be able to use a mobile phone in the way I am now. Years ago I use phone simply for calls, that's all it was. Now I send and read text messages, make calendar appointments, surf the web, read email, chat on IM. Thank you for all the great work you've done for blind people and enabling us to use our phones in the way that I could never imagine would be possible.

Laura Hegarty Ireland
Dearest Mrs Brand & your 4 children, My name is Laura Hegarty and I'm a Technology Trainer working for the National Council for the Blind of Ireland (NCBI) and I was deeply sadened to hear the news about Torsten. I'm sure its a very hard time for you all and all I can say is that Torsten along with Marcus have made a real difference to the people of Ireland through AT for Mobile Phones and this is all because of Torstens dedication to his great work. The software has made our service users so independent and it has becomes a necessity in their lives every day. Please accept our wishes from all at NCBI andour thoughts are with you all during this very very sad time. Kind Regards Laura Hegarty

Tony Pitchford United Kingdom
I have been extremely upset on learning of Torsten’s untimely passing. To say that he improved my life wouldn’t do justice to what he did for me and others like me, I am of the firm opinion that his pioneering efforts to make cellular phones accessible to blind people have resulted in lives being revolutionised. How many of us now take for granted all the features available to us when we reach for our cell phone? When I first heard of Talx on the communicator, I thought I must be dreaming. Torsten helped turn Science Fiction in to Science fact, and I hope that you his family can derive some comfort from his legacy. Every time I reach for my mobile, I will think of your Husband, / father, and be grateful to him. My condolences, on the tragic passing of a true hero.

Ng Choon Hwee Singapore
Thank you Torsten for your contribution to the visually impaired community. Good-bye and may the Lord's comfort, peace and love be with your loved ones.

Dan Rossi United States
The highest praise I can bestow on a person is, you made a difference. I have had occasion to offer that praise a handful of times, but never has it been more appropriate than now. For Torsten, Through his insight, his dedication, his drive, and his work with Marcus, he touched the lives of tens of thousands of blind people and improved their situations. he opened a new world of accessibility and did more than his fair share to level the playing field of the blind in a sighted world. His contributions truly made a marked difference in the lives of so many.

Benjamin Topel Germany
Saqib United Kingdom
I would like to thank Torsten for bringing the joy of accessibility to a mobile phone in my life. I first discovered Talks in 2007. This discovery was a priceless one as for years I struggled badly using Nokia Symbian Series 40 phones and could bearly read my own text messages and 90% of the time I was having to rely on family members to read my personal text messages. Thank you Torsten you will for ever be remembered for your work because it opened up a whole new world of accessibility for me. I owe you a debt of gratitude and more. RIP my friend.

Marco Zehe Germany
Torsten's simulated pocket calculator, written in Turbo Pascal, was the first computer programme I ever hacked into my CP/M on the Commodore 128D. This was what ultimately got me interested in programming and pursue a career in computer sciences. I also enjoyed the great work of him and Marcus on the Talks screen reader for many years. I had the privilege of knowing Torsten personally. Thank you for all you've given the worldwide blindness community! Rest In Peace!

I send my deepest condolences to the Brand family. Thank you so very much for sharing with so many thousands of us such a man of genius as Torsten Brand. I have been using Talks for a short period of time and have benefited greatly for the cell phone field being so level that I can do all kinds of things with my phone, just like my sighted peers. I am deeply saddened to here about Torsten's untimely passing, but I know that his legacy and vision will continue to live on! God bless you all, bring you much comfort, and give you peace and joy!

Lisa Larges United States
It's impossible to calculate the impact that Torsten Brand's work will have in the lives of blind and visually impaired persons. Maybe the particular software applications that Torsten developed will be obsolete in just a little while, but his ideas and innovations for how products should be designed will leave a mark that is lasting. I love using Talks, because it is so well designed, because it was obviously created with the blind user in mind, because it reflects what blind and visually impaired persons actually want and need, and not just what some engineers think they want and need. This shift to starting with the user and then designing a product that actually works in the real world marks a sea change in access technology for the visually impaired, and Torsten Brand was a significant part of that change. In this way, his work has not only contributed to advancements in technology but also, and more importantly to our quest for equality and full recognition as full members of our society. May we honor his memory by keeping alive his ideas and his commitment to excellence!

Martin Wilsher United Kingdom
I am very sad to hear of the passing of Torsten, who has revolutionised the lives of so many people, me included. Torsten had vision that is certain. RIP.

A star on earth and a star in heaven. Truly Torsten was a man who thought outside of the box and made the seemingly impossible possible. Your memory will live on though you will be sadly missed by your friends, colleagues and those whose life you have so deeply impacted. Thank you for your belief, drive and vision. Were it not for this, mobile phone use for leisure, and in my case, for my business would be all that much more difficult. Thanks to you I am enabled. My deepest condolences to Torsten’s family, friends and work colleagues. Know you were blessed to know such an inspiration and that he will live on in many people’s memories every time our mobiles speak to us. Rest In Peace.

I remembering hearing a recorded interview with Torsten. I remembering having a question or two about the Talks product. He e-mailed me back and a while later I purchased the Talks software, which was my endeavor into the mobile world. So sorry for your loss. He was remarkable and enhanced the lives of many. Be proud.

Robert Stigile United States
Hello, Due to the program that Torsten created, Talks, I am able to communicate with coworkers by texting them to let them know when meetings are and when they need to be at work. I am also able to communicate with my friends and keep up with sighted family and friends by using the talks program to text email and other such use of my phone. I am deeply appreciative of what Torsten created and he will be deeply missed. Also, at the last CSUN conference, torsten helped me personally, by putting Talks back on my phone when it crashed so that I would be able to use the phone again. He is a wonderful patient man who is missed by All.

Lalo Lizarde United States
Thank you very much Torsten for everything you did for us.

I'm sorry for your loss as a husband and father. I will keep you in my prayers. I know how hard it is to lose a help mate. I lost my wife to complications from a heart attack. I personally have greatly benefited from Torsten's work with talks. I use it every day. When my wife Sandee had her heart attack I was able to call my family and church to let them know and through the months after, was able to talk to my wife on the phone when I couldn't get to the nursing home she was in. Again Thank you so much. I am very thankful for His legacy. Torsten, Thank you for your caring heart, and all you've done to make my life much easier. Sincerely, And may The Lord Jesus help you through the times ahead. I'll be praying for you and your family. Always, David Dobler

For a number of years, I struggled with a phone in order to just make calls in case of emergency when away from my home. I know nothing can ever replace him, but as a result of his dilligent work, he will always be remembered. Thanks, Torsten.

Those who make a difference in the world, leaving it a better place than they found it, are very special people. Torsten Brand was such a person. He saw that the blind needed the same access to mobile phones as the sighted, and he made it happen. My use of the software he helped to develop has benefited me greatly over the past five years. I would like to express my condolences to his friends and family, and I hope that these tributes from all over the world will bring some comfort to those who knew him and loved him.

Demetrios Boutsikakis United States
I worked closely with Torsten to integrate Talks on the Nokia platforms back in the early 2000s and fought many battles together. I'm honored to have been a part a movement he created which changed a whole industry. The mobile TTS market along with countless of visually impaired lives would not have been the same without his drive, determination, and unwillingness to compromise.

Good bye, Dear Torsten and thank you for everything super things what you did for the blind people. Your soul will find the freedom.

Through Torsten's efforts, I was given the chance to use all the features of the modern cellular phones, not just the ability to make phone calls. He opened up the world of applications to blind people--helping to make us a tiny bit more equal in the technology game. In 1990 I bought my first cellular phone, but it was not until 2004 that I was able to use the whole set of phone features--when I was given my first Talx-enabled phone. To Torsten's family, know that he left a legacy of equality and dignity that will not be forgotten. The work he did with Marcus Groeber will live on as some of the most creative and worthwhile technological advances of the century.

My first experience with a cell phone was a Party Animal, using Virgin Mobile prepaid. I could not access the settings. All I could do was make calls. My second phone was an Owasys phone with T-Mobile. Slightly better, but I later decided that the phone was still too limited. Finally, I purchased a Nokia N82 with TALKS. At last, I could use the phone to it's full potential, and all made possible by Mr. Brand. My everlasting gratitude to Torsten and all he has done for people such as myself, and my deepest condolences to his family for their loss.

Shanto-Esther Soriano Forca Germany

Although I hardly know Torsten myself, I am an enthusiastic talks user. When I first tried out Talks a few years ago, I was surprised how many functions were now available for blind persons and many new possibilities were offered to me. Torsten's sudden death shocked and saddened me and my collegues deeply.

I remember my first days of using a mobile phone, which was very risky and hard, since I had to memorize item layouts, and ask others to read my messages. Torsten has definitely changed my mobile phone experiences from scratch with his Talks screen reader that I was first using on Nokia 3650 and now on N73, and I will be permanently thankful for what he did for us blind!

Goodbye my friend

Lichy, Olaf Germany
Olaf

My memories of Torsten go back almost 30 years. Whenever we met, I enjoyed his company and his humor. Despite his successes in the field of assistive technology, Torsten always remained a friendly and down-to-earth person. His achievements have helped many blind and visually impaired poeple towards a more independent and fulfilled way of life. We have lost not only a tremendous source of knowledge in the field of assistive technology for the visually impaired but also a person who freely shared this knowledge. Torsten, we thank you for all you did for us and we will miss you for sure.

In memory of Torsten with heartfelt thanks. A man who recognised the real needs of blind people in the first decade of the 21st century and then did something about it. We all owe Torsten more than we can ever re-pay.
